Testimonial from Sandra. Kurri Kurri. NSW.”I found any part of the Counselling Service extremely outstanding and very helpful”. Hello, I am the Principal Counsellor of Heartbeat Connection. Our rooms are situated at Greenhills (near Maitland) NSW. We have Registered and Qualified Counsellors.
I am a supervisor and psychotherapist / Counsellor with over 20 years of experience spanning Asia and Australia. I specialize in providing support and interventions for neurodiverse individuals, including those with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Dyslexia, Bipolar Disorder, and related conditions. My approach integrates relaxation techniques, breathing exercises, and well-being practices to address anxiety, while talk therapy assists clients in achieving behavioural goals. As an active listener, I offer a non-judgmental space for clients to explore concerns. With qualifications in Special Education and Counseling, including Cognitive Behavior Therapy and Dialectical Therapy, I prioritize early intervention and am a registered NDIS and Work Safe Therapist. Contact Deborah on 0447262130 for a consultation.
I have been in private practice for over 30 years and love that every client brings a new perspective, expecially within a neuroscience framework.
Originally trained at London University in Education and Psychology, I then went on to complete my Masters in Public Health at Curtin University and many years later (2013),completed my PhD at UQ, specialising in the support needs for families who experience child death and other issues related to stigmatised loss and grief. I see clients privately through EAP and those with self managed NDIS plans.
I also offer professional supervision – more information on my website.
Apart from the general counselling issues such as anxiety, relationships, domestic violence, loss and grief and trauma, I spend a lot of time supporting clients with Chronic Pain (as a sufferer myself), challenges of living with dementia and other chronic conditions, and supporting carers who often struggle with burnout.
Understanding the neuroscience of chronic pain and trying to break down the medical model of siloed practice is one of my passions.I work within a psychosocial framework, especially when mainstream support doesn’t seem to offer clarity or solutions. I have helped establish mental health programs, worked in private and public service, and private practice. Most of my referrals are EAP, word of mouth and through solicitors. I am proud to serve some families through the generations, which is a great honour in that the families both remember my services and contact me again to support their loved ones, often years later.
In 2008 I published a book called ‘Nothing Changes if Nothing Changes; what to expect from a professional counselor’ because many of my clients told me that they hadn’t realised what counselling was about, and had they known sooner, they would have attended sessions earlier. It’s so important that we advocate for our clients by equalising the power.
My second book, ‘Living with Chronic Pain – From OK to Despair and Finding My Way Back Again‘ has received wonderful reviews from people living with chronic pain, health, and allied health professionals working with chronic pain and other related industries. I talk about all the things no one else does and use my own experiences to illustrate the key issues..
I am currently developing an online training, offering insights into how we can best support our clients who live with chronic pain, or any other chronic condition.
